It is common for CBSS member states to have an ombudsperson for children. The independent ombudspersons can support the improvement of public administration, government accountability. They can also provide accountability by being a voice for upholding national and international commitments for children. In some countries, an ombdusperson can have the mandate to consider individual complaints about how the state has responded to a child protection case. In others, such as in Norway, the ombdudspersons role is focused on supporting the necessary policy changes to strengthen systems and institutions that deliver child welfare and child protection services.
